Although oxidation reactions are crucial for life, they can also be damaging. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules by scavenging the free radicals from the body cells. A diet high in antioxidants may reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, inflammation, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer, ageing process and certain cancers. Familiar antioxidants in the diet are Vitamin C, E, CoQ10, Polyphenolic compounds and carotenoids.
